This is the only national monument in Texas. The visitors' center is thirty miles north of Amarillo. It contains rich scenery, geology, and Indian history. |

It is one of the most important archeological sites in North America. What they discovered here was that they had a great source of flint. The flint comes in a rainbow of colors. |
| The Indians found the place at least 12,000 years ago. There are reds and maroons that form what look like slabs of bacon. There are some blues and greens too. They made tools out of the flint. |

The flint was traded all the way to Minnesota. This monument is 1,079 acres. It is limited to guided tours with reservations only. |
| Extinction of some large animals signaled the beginning of the Archaic Period. The Archaic Period is a time when people hunted animal species existing today. |
