Ohio Mound City Group |
| Ancient Native American tribes built huge mounds in Ohio. Their names were the Mound City Group. They were like farmers who lived in stable areas. Some people also believe that they were the ancestors of ancient Native Americans that lived near the mounds about the time the first European explorers came. All the tribes that built the mounds built them a little bit differently. They are usually shaped like pyramids and long wall shaped. Their sizes ranges from 100 acres to 1 acre. The mounds were almost always used for either burial places or for foundations for buildings. These mounds vary in age. |

| Some even date all the way back to the sixth century. Stone, copper, mica obsidian, and meteoric iron were used in making the prehistoric mounds. They got the obsidian from the Rocky Mountains, the mica came from the Appalachian Mountains, and the copper from Wisconsin. All this indicates the widespread trade by the Native Americans. The Mound City Group practiced weaving and pottery making. They made stone carvings of animals and humans. The mounds at Hopewell and Mound City, Ohio have been investigated extensively. |
