Louisiana

Poverty Point

Poverty Point, in northeastern Louisiana began more than twelve centuries before Christ. Before the Egyptian slaves built the Pyramids at Giza. They were a very civilized group, who left behind artifacts for us to share. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in North America.
The people who lived at Poverty Point were like the ancient Egyptians, they set before themselves enormous tasks. There are four main mounds. Bayou Macon, which flows past Poverty Point, has eroded some of the original complex. It is thought that these ridges served as foundations for their houses. They discovered artifacts during excavations that support this theory.
