Canyons of the Ancients

The Canyons of the Ancients was declared
a national monument on June 9, 2000. Bill Clinton was the president when
the monument was declared. Canyons of the Ancients covers 164,000 acres
in the four corners area in Colorado. |
| There are deserts, canyons, and mesas, but
no rivers or lakes. Cattle are raised there and wells for oil and gas
are at the monument. Humans have been part of the land for about 10,000
years. Canyons of the Ancients represents the Ancestral Publoan and other
Native American cultures. There are lots of Pueblo dwellings to see and
trails to hike. |

The monument also contains a large selection
of wildlife such as birds, lizards, and snakes. There are pit and cliff
dwellings, kivas, petroglyphs, sweat lodges, shrines, and field houses.The
Canyons of the Ancients contain the Anasazi Heritage Center. The monument
has more than 6,000 recorded archaeological sites per unit area. |
