Oregon Caves
The Oregon Caves were declared as a national monument in 1909 by President William Taft. The location is in the Siskiyou Mountains in southwestern Oregon. The caves are very big in geology and biology. The four hundred eighty acre monument has many activities to do. You can enjoy a hike on one of the three hiking trails. People also snowshoe, raft, and kayak.
Above ground, there are old growth coniferous forests. Below ground, there is a marble cave. In the deep chambers people have found jaguar and grizzly bear fossils. The underground cave was discovered by Elijah Davidson in 1874. The three and a half mile of marble caverns contain large amounts of cave dwelling insects native to this area. All year long the cave is 42 degrees. In the area the caves are located, there are fifty inches of rain a year and the average snowfall is fourteen feet.
