Camelot Elementary School is located in Lewiston, Idaho. Lewiston is in the panhandle on the state line which divides Idaho and Washington. The two states are divided by the Snake River.
Camelot Elementary School has been referred to as the closest thing to a country school Lewiston has. As you walk around our neighborhoods and school, you find this to be true, not only because we are so far away from the city, or that a number of our students come from families with farms, but because of the community atmosphere we have here at Camelot. Our school is a hub of activities for this area. We not only provide the education for the students in our community, we offer a gym for sports, community spaghetti feeds, book sales and carnivals. The school library is on the VALNet system and is open to all community members. We are also offering parent technology classes in our computer lab.
In 1963, the Lewiston School District purchased a ten acre site at 19th Street and Grelle Avenue in the east section of the Lewiston Orchards as a future elementary school site. Before the school district bought the property, it was a pig farm.
The first building was built in 1969. This building was used for all purposes including classrooms, principal and secretary offices, and the serving area for lunch.
As Lewiston and Camelot began to grow, a second building was needed. It was completed in 1977. This was used for grades 1-3 and the old building housed grades 4-6, as well as the principal and secretary.
The multipurpose building was added in 1978. This building contained the gymnasium, principal and secretary's offices, kitchen, a kindergarten classroom, and teacher's lunchroom.
Tammany school annexed into the Lewiston School District in 1995 and Camelot grew! We went from being the smallest school in the district, with an enrollment under 300 students, to the largest, with over 500 students. The district brought in two portable buildings and we were bursting at the seams! It was necessary to build one more building.
The last building was completed in August of 1996. We also remodeled the multipurpose building. When construction was complete, we had a major move. Building 1 now has third and fourth grade classrooms, the E.E.S room and the teacher's lunch/work room. Building 2 has first and second grade classrooms, the Counselor's office, the speech office and a teacher's work area. Building 3 still has the gym and kitchen, but it also has two kindergarten classrooms, the music room, the intervention room, and the P.E. office. Building 4, our newest building, includes fifth and sixth grade classrooms, the Library, Technology Center, and the Office.
