Complete ArcView 1 coursework with core group of GIS students

Conduct a GPS survey of Normal Hill Cemetery (Lewiston ID) to determine the pattern of reburials

Report ArcView and GIS findings to ESRI at the 2002 ESRI International Users Conference (San Diego CA)

PHASE 3

Conduct a ground penetrating radar survey of the suspected mass grave site in Normal Hill Cemetery

Analysis of GPR data and imagery

Conduct document searches at Lewis-Clark State College for the period 1862 - 1889

Obtain digital photography (satellite and on-site) of the 5th Street properties (now Pioneer Park)

PHASE 4

Complete all document surveys and historical images acquisitions, conduct interviews with families of persons buried at the site.

Create a complete graves registration of burials at the 5th Street site, 1862 - 1888

January 2004 - August 2004

Conduct the Standard Positioning Service Accuracy Study to determine relation accuracy of GPS units

Prepare the Residual Soil Contamination Study to investigate possible contagions

Conduct a comprehensive "harvest" of all archives held in the Nez Perce County Historical Society to exhaust all local acquisitions (photographs, et. al.)

Consult with City of Lewiston staff to create a special status for the 5th Street site.

Present study findings at regional and national conferences.

Conduct a total station survey of the site to produce an accurate plat of the old cemetery grounds, comparing this plat to the surveys of 1874, 1895 and 1903.

Complete ArcView II coursework with research assistants

9-10 June: Geography as a Spatial Science (teacher in-service)  Three students begin their studies and activities for a special dual enrollment class with the University of Idaho, finishing in early September.

10 July - 17 July:  Lewis-Clark Rediscovery Project meetings, St. Louis MO

9 August: Lewis & Clark Rediscovery grant, $11, 638.00 awarded

18 August: first mass media report, "City Beat," Lewis-Clark State College and City of Lewiston (public access television)


September  2004 - February 2005

PHASE 5

Conduct a comprehensive ground penetrating radar / magnetic induction survey of the original city cemetery site (approximately 2 acres)

PHASE 6 

Conduct an exhumation of an identified grave site to move the remains to Normal Hill Cemetery and study the method of burial. [This proposal was withdrawn in favor of archaeoligical investigations of the sub-soils of the park. q.v.]

Place a commemorative monument at the original cemetery site that indicates its continued status as a cemetery

September - December: Special Issues in GIS Management (dual enrollment course with the University of Idaho)

7-8 October: ground penetrating radar surveys of Pioneer Park

14 October: report to the Nez Perce County Genealogical Society

December: soil investigations during the removal of playground equipment in park

January 2005: soil investigations during the placement of new equipment

February: soil investigations during placement of new water lines through the area of the old cemetery

Reporting of the project to continue through 2006, with presentations scheduled at major national conventions.


April 2008 - September 2008

Conduct a comprehensive soil survey for evidence of arsenic contamination in soil samples and tree cores
